Daria Gamliel for Cinetalk.net

Anyone who has followed Cinetalk closely through the years, would know about our love of horror movies, film scores, and Dario Argento. This past weekend, we randomly decided to revisit two Argento films, Phenomena and Suspiria. By whatever fluke, two days later, we were informed that there was an upcoming retrospective for the director in New York City, beginning June 17th.

Covid is still lingering, and it wouldn’t have been possible to travel across the border on such short notice. We are therefore saddened that we cannot be at the Beware of Dario Argento: A 20-Film Retrospective. Argento himself will be in attendance, and 4K Restorations of 17 of his films will be screened including the two aforementioned classics.

Films that introduced the director’s daughter – now an established actress – to cinephiles are included in the event. Trauma and The Stendahl Syndrome, for example, are two underrated favorites of ours, which showcase a young Asia Argento.

In addition, the horror master’s less-seen made-for-TV giallo, Do You Like Hitchcock? is part of the screening list. But what may be the perfect gift to any Argento fan is the North American premiere of Dark Glasses. The brand new 2022 release is Argento’s first feature in 10 years! If you, like Cinetalk, cannot be in NYC for this momentous occasion, let’s together, hope for a Montreal premiere this summer – perhaps at Fantasia Film Festival, which ran the Suspiria 4K Restoration in 2017.
