Nicolas Cage seemed like a cool dad, despite his children thinking he’s weird. And then…things really got weird after an asteroid emanating pink light descended onto their farm. Cage gives Jack Here’s Johnnnny Nicholson a bit of a run for his money in Color Out of Space. Richard Stanley has returned with a sometimes over-the-top but nonetheless entertaining sci-fi horror based on H.P. Lovecraft’s most beloved short story. Stanley took a lot of liberties. Some came out campy and chuckle-worthy, and others worked a little better.
This out-of-this-world alien invasion tale may be the result of Stanley watching Poltergeist while stoned. With some fauna and flora horror and The Shining thrown in for good measure, the result is silly but sassy. Stanley has managed to bring to life the idea of “the color” (here, mainly pink) as the intruder. Lots of CG makes for an explosive and colorful finale.
And the inclusion of always-typecast Tommy Chong adds an amusing layer to the story.
