Adolescence is hard. Teenagers seem to be drawn to sensual stimulus. Fabrice du Welz turns a lens on adventure-romance that is enticing and unwelcome at the same time. Adoration tightly frames the characters’ eyes, their hair, their skin. It is both sensual and off-putting – much like the nature of the attraction between young Gloria and Paul.

Escaped from the grasps of adults – and Gloria’s hospitalization for mental instability – the kids encounter the new perils of nature, strangers, and themselves. One might say that Paul is a willing victim to Gloria’s unhinged behavior. Part of his enchantment is caused by, yes, hormones, but there is something far deeper involved, that even he can’t grasp.

A disturbing piece of cinema with a soft heart on the inside.
