The Montreal network of Maisons de la culture presents one real oddball object for kids, family or whoever is still young at heart.

Jack-of-all-trade performer Antoine Laprise, co-director Jacques Laroche and the team from Théâtre de la Petite Marée bring you a coming of age story like no other: Otomonogatari –  L’éveil d’une oreille a theatrical and musical odyssey diving into the life and time of Japanese Avant Garde music pioneer Otomo Yoshihide while introducing him to the youth.

Who the hell would have thought of such thing? The idea is awesome. And so is the audaciously clever outcome, between the musical biopic, theater and the puppet show.  It is as delightfully strange as it is rewarding.

Otomo Yoshihide?

Guitarist, turntablist,  electro-Sen-Sai, while first noticed as part of Japanese super group Ground Zero, played with (members of) Boredoms, of Sonic Youth, with John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, Bob Ostertag, Derek Bailey, Christian Marclay and our own local turntablist Martin Tétreault who acted on this piece as an advisor.

For the soundtrack aficionados among the readers of, Otomo-san provided music for celebrated film makers Masaho Adashi and Ann Hui as well as for a string of Manga films and TV shows. 1993’s epic drama The Blue Kite comes to mind as one of his best known scores together with Berlin’s Golden Bear winner Summer Snow (1995) .

Through cardboard, vinyls, objects,  its entertaining value and lightly subversive ways create an enchanting escapist world of Art, about Art. It successfully tackles strong universal themes as self discovery, developing curiosity, believing in oneself and reacting to tragedy (he grew up in Fukushima). It might boost your kid’s confidence because the makers of Otomonogatari trust their intelligence.

And the young audience was quiet, receptive and surprisingly focused. The perfect crowd for a delightful show.
