Yoon-Seong Kang’s first feature, the crime-action film The Outlaws (2017), apparently based on true events,  tells of a larger than life cop (actor Ma Dong-Seok from Train to Busan and The Good, the Bad and the Weird) determined to undermine Chinese crime syndicates in the South Korean Garibong district.

Nothing new in this offering, but Mr Kang understands what the ingredients to a successful recipe are about and the routine material works quite well. You’ll get you’re pretty well choreographed and shot fighting blood show with fists, cubs and other objects. Lots of action and comedy bits.

The whole show gets a great lead with Ma Dong-Sok. His character is a bit of a scoundrel himself, giving free beatings to suspect, offering drinks to minors and going to brothels. With his strong presence and sense of timing, Dong-Sok manages to make him convincing and even lovable.

The Outlaws won’t make history but it provides the goods.
