Fantasia International Film Festival is 21. It starts today with the opening film, Byung-gil Jung’s action thriller The Villainess, and runs until August 2nd showcasing 160 features and nearly 300 shorts.

Takashi Miike, honored last year at the fest with a lifetime Achievement Award is back on the scene of the crime with JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: DIAMOND IS UNBREAKABLE, from the manga by Hirohiko Kitakubo, shown at 21h45 at Théâtre Hall of Concordia University, the main venue.

Some of the Highlights include David Lowery’s A Ghost Story, starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, on Friday July 14th, 7h15 PM at Theatre Hall. The director will attend. Agnieszka Holland’s Spoor, a 40th Anniversary 4K Restoration of Dario Argento’s infamous film of Suspiria (1977), a Live presentation of 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs with Live musical score composed by specialist of the genre Gabriel Thibodeau,  the documentaries Tokyo Idols, about the controversial phenomenon of teen idols in Japan, and Liberation Day in which Mythic Slovenian Industrial band Laibach ventures into North Korean land.

Cult favorite Larry Cohen, Turkish action star Cuneyt Arkin and Canadian producer Nicole Robert will receive career awards.
