29th Tokyo International Film Fest : Diamond Island (Cambodia, 2016)
A young man, Bora, leaves rural Cambodia to work on a construction site in Phnom Penh, building luxury apartments named Diamond Island. He comes across his older brother who left without notice five years earlier…
Diamond Island is the debut feature of Cambodian director Davy Chou made with strong input by cinematographer Thomas Favel and with Europen fundings. It offers a captivating look at modern Cambodia with its new goals and dreams, also filled with harsh reality. As we follow most of the action through the eyes of Bora, the beautifully mannered look and sound deliver a minimalist and intimate narrative.
Diamond Island is a beautiful restrained drama about a country deep into transition.
