FNC 2016: BELGICA (BELGIUM- Felix Van Groeningen)

L3A6551-665x300.jpg

The ups and downs of two brothers as they run a hot new club in Ghent, Belgium.

Three years after his Oscar nominated heartbreaking melodrama (The Broken Circle Breakdown, also shown at the fest), Felix Van Goreningen  is back into brotherhood territory with this feverish new drama. BELGICA earned its director the Best Director – World Cinema Dramatic section award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

The plot doesn’t  cover new territories as we follow the brothers achieving their dream for success at an early stage before the inevitable downfall. On the other hand, the film works quite effectively thanks to the director’s bouncy style and  strong performances from the cast.

The pulsating soundtrack  is  produced by Ghent’s local alternative rock/electronic band Soulwax (they composed 15 pieces exclusively for the film). It is one of the film’s brightest spot.
