In Hong-jin Na’s third feature, The Wailing, a cop is investigating strange events that occur with the arrival of a stranger-like ghost who seems to be spreading a sickness.

With its successful mix of genres, frequent changes in pacing, its load of creepy acts, playing with surreal feel with your occasional jumpy moments, his fair use of music and sound to sustain some good camera work, The Wailing provides the goods.

It starts like a cop movie, offering crowd pleasing sequences, it slowly paves the way to a more horrific ambiance with, if at times uneven, generally good acting, a slice of confusion but with efficient alternate editing.

It may not be completely convincing to those who dislike the horror-thriller genre, but it is an above average example of its genre.
