Michael Almereyda’s Experimenter is an American indie film, a biography of Stanley Milgram’s 60’s provocative experiments on obedience to Authority.

Peter Sargaard, in the lead, gives a great performance that was overlooked by the Academy when the 2016 Oscar’s nominations came out. The same could be said for the rest of a strong cast, notably Winona Ryder.

While films on such scientific topics usually deal real life experiments with too much romantic and/or thriller-like crescendo heavily over dramatized for no reasons, Almereyda’s direction keeps things simple and somewhat quietly clinical focusing on its subject rather than cheap effects. He takes advantage of a limited budget with simple but interesting tricks (for instance the use of apparent retro projection in several scenes) . All the proper choices offering a fair and appealing picture.
