Coming out friday, Nicholas Hytner’s light comedy Lady in the Van, from Alan Bennett’s writings, a mostly true story of a somewhat snobbish man in a fancy neighbourhood who slowly accepts a strange old lady living in her car and parked in his driveway for 15 years. Lady in the Van is a fair and honest piece of 70’s London life . Alex Jennings is pretty good in Bennets role, but the real star of the show is Oscar winning Maggie Smith (1969 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) who is just showing us again, at 82, what a wonderful and complex actress she is in an highly enjoyable, sympathetic and Oscar worthy (the Academy missed that one) role .
